Ally Bank Commercial

Ally Bank recently changed names from GMAC bank and they are really pushing the advertising front very heavily. All over, we see commercials of the bank and they are actually not too bad. Here are the three variations for you to enjoy.

I love the truck commercial the best. It shows that with a little creativity, you can create a lot of buzz around your product. Good job.

These commercials have GOT to be created by an ex-school yard bully. The kids expressions, the bank rep’s demeanor, the ‘situation’…all are just too funny and convincingly realistic.

the essence of the mega-corp warranty “if it breaks in the middle you get to keep both halves” could not have been stated more clearly. Warranties that used to be included in the purchase price now cost extra. The authors or those hidden restrictions are cut from the same cloth as the producers of these commercials.Enjoy, but remember there probably was a reason the name was changed from GMAC.

I find the “pony” commercial close to being disturbing. You show two girls, one being a pretty blonde and the other not as pretty dark haired girl. If the dark haired girl had darker skin it could be veiwed as Racial anti-black. My daughter looked like the blonde when she was young. I find that commercial in very bad taste.

The purpose of the commercial is to positively advertise Ally Bank. The commercial’s depiction is [supposed to be] representative of other banks’ practices. While it would be in poor taste, judgment and libelous to come out and simply state “they do this but we won’t”, they express it in the form of a commercial to “put it out there” subtly, subliminally and, evidently, effectively as you caught it.

Most of us of color, ethnicity or whatever term you prefer have been subjected to just the kind of treatment that is in the commercial’s theme and content. It occurs via telephone (accent), e mail/written correspondence or in person. And, sadly enough, it often is just like in the commercial.

But I would have to disagree that it is in bad taste. It is what life is, hurtful or not. In bad taste would be if they were just like the commercial. My hope is that they are not and that they were in fact attempting to impress upon ‘us’ their difference from others.

Adults are caught up with racial hang ups.
Not children.

If you’re someone on the constant search for what may be deemed as racist, you can see the “pony” commercial that way.

If you understand that kids are kids and most little girls want a pony, you can see it that way too.

Kids are kids.

oh brother, Gary get your head out of the PC mode and just appreciate the commercial for what it is…and as far “not as pretty”- she’s the cutest in my book and probably has a personality to match…always look for negative and you’ll find it or create it, and end up living it…

The one not named (white guy) June 14, 2009 at 10:05 pm

I find the Ally Bank Pony Commercial to be very racial. When the guy asked the the first girl (hispanic looking), he gives her a toy pony, but when he asks the second girl (white), he gives her a real pony, and when the first girl say “You didnt say I can have a real pony?” the host said, “you didnt ask”…..keep in mind the white girl ddn’t ask either, favoring the white.

Im white, and I found it tasteless..

Racist? Are you people kidding. Relax and laugh at it.

ALL the kids are adorable, and are phenominal actors.

Do you think these commercials were completed in 1 take? Do you think that the kids are now in therapy.

Grow up.

Why are there so many attempts to find a reason to suggest exploitation? A sign of the times.

To Gary and the other who didn’t want to print his or her name. Don’t be such a bunch of lemons and start laughing rather than looking for racial or other connotations in everything. Folks like you really make me cringe and sums up what is wrong is society. The world is a great place, smile and it’ll smile back at you. It won’t kill you. Pathetic.

I’ve seen that commercial many times and never did it cross my mind about it being “racially motivated”!!! In fact, what has struck me each and every time I’ve seen it, is that the brown haired girl seems to be the cuter, more personable one. I never even thought of her as being Hispanic, until someone said that! Her hair seemed to be a bit more messed up than the blonde’s, but that made her look like a “real” kid, more natural, to me. The blonde seems more fake with her hair perfect and all. That little brown eyed girl is all personality and can act to boot!

I was a banker for many years and also a father of 3 children. I find these ads offensive and a mean exploitation of childrens feelings. Any subliminal message of the bank’s advantages over its competitors is lost in the message.

Reply

BobOso July 2, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Hardly lost, if there is really one there at all. I didn’t see one when I did my post regarding its presence. I was just shedding another perspective to aid Gary in his viewing of the video. I personally just saw the commercial for what it is; an entertaining and highly creative commercial. But even if there was a subliminal message, I fail to see any offensive content.

I have always had the belief that one sees what one seeks. And if your view is one of pessimism, a ‘Gloomy Gus’, per se, then that IS what you’ll see about you. Just like wearing rose colored glasses. Everything will be ‘rosey’; tainted and tinted in color.

Are any of those who say there isn’t any racist overtones in the commercial actually a minority?

Reply

Becky July 2, 2009 at 11:51 am

Plus…

How racist is it to assume the dark haired girl is of any ethnicity in the “pony” commercial?

I say this because I’ve got dark hair and dark eyes and when I was younger I’d get tanned a lot. People were sure I must be an American Indian.

To me the little girl looks exactly how one of my cousins looked when she was that age and she’s not “ethnic” at all.

This is clearly child abuse. Our nation is currently in a crisis of child abuse and murder.
Ally bank is encouraging child abuse.
They should be reprimanded and their ads pulled because they are a danger to the public.

Child abuse? please! People need to stop being such “sensitive dweebs” (thanks for that one Rob, lol) and get a real life.

I cannot stand commercials on TV even though I know they pay the bills, but the Ally commercials are fantastic. Those kids are precious and from the look of the expression on their faces, they are not acting. I also picture the “torturous soul” who happens to be a very charming looking man giving the kids a big hug after filming and saying, “I was only kidding.”

Reply

Andrea July 6, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Racist? Not so much racist, as subliminally pointing out that cute blondes (white people?) have historically represented the privileged class. As stated above, the cute blonde didn’t have to ask for a “real” pony, it was given to her as a member of the privileged class. The rest of us, no matter what color, if we aren’t a member of that class, have to ask, if not beg, for equality. The brunette little girl didn’t look ethnic so much as the other blonde girl just looked so “white” and “upper class”. The truth makes a lot of people uncomfortable. But, I think that little brunette is going to grow up and run her own bank someday while the blonde is going to be a desperate housewife addicted to painkillers in order to get through her miserable but pony filled life.

I simply looked Googled for a site that had the Ally bank commercials. My original comment at the top says why. I think these commercials are just exceptional…in a GOOD way. Guess I just looked through the haze (of subliminal racism?) and saw the core; creativity and comedic essence.

Thanks Norm, for your insightful comment on the sick nature of these commercials. It should be obvious to anyone with an ounce of astuteness that these children are not actors. I cannot imagine anyone laughing at a child who has been so disappointed!

BTW, both girls in the pony commercial are white.

Reply

How are these commercials racist? All of these kids look perfectly average-but I guess average has a diferent meaning for everyone. Also, if you look at these commercials as being racist, you are only making it racist for yourself.

In my opinion, if it had been the other way around with the dark-haired girl getting the real pony, people would only assume that she was “getting special treatment” because she isn’t white. That would be an acknowledgment of racism, giving it a chance to exist.

People look too much into these things, We do it all the time. Even the way we examine literature and films. We have a habit of trying to see any negative connotation in any situation. They are just commercials! Just watch it and move on.

The commercials are very entertaining. In looking up info on them I stumbled across this site — and some of the comments here are entertaining as well. A little depressing but still entertaining. I’m a good example of the “melting pot” — Puerto Rican, Italian, French, German – etc. (perro sato). Not even the slightest though of anything racial crossed my mind while watching these commercials. I believe a significant majority of what is considered “racial” is simply folks looking to stir things up — or worse, to perpetuate real racism much in the same way you can impact a child’s performance by constantly belittling them.

I have participated in diversity programs and always get a kick out of the things that are identified as racism. We have become so politically correct and sensitive that we will never get beyond such matters. I think the more progress we seem to make, the more ridiculous some folks get. It is all very entertaining. There is no racism in the commercial. There is no subliminal message. If the “banker” said “..sorry, your skin is too dark for a real pony…” then there would be cause for concern.

BobOso August 13, 2009 at 7:09 pm

One thing no one has mentioned; isn’t it going to be ‘meaner’ when he takes the real pony from the blond lil’ girl? It’s one thing to deprive a kid from getting a real pony by offering her a toy and letting her see another girl get one. But taking a ‘new pet’ from a child has GOT to be much more cruel. So, where’s the subliminal racial bias now?

Rob August 14, 2009 at 11:20 am

Kona and Andrea, so what they’re black, white, pink, yellow, orange, that they’re kids, or lower class, middle class, upper class, who really, really cares? Society has bred a whole new breed of fragile, thin skinned do-gooders. Does my head in. Get your head out of your a** and enjoy life. Before you know it you’ll be 80 and think Christ where’s my life gone (oh deary, I said Christ, may have offended someone there). You lot should live on an island away from those who rejoice life for what it is. A journey of discovery and fun. Smile and it’ll smile back at yer.

I am a minority and I don’t see the racist overtone in it. Ally was trying to make a point as in the many other commercials they have advertised, with the angle of children’s simplicity. The bad thing about all this is, is that some people saw subliminal racism in it, and will push this upon others and their children who initially didn’t see it that way. How are we ever going to kill racism when people are keeping it alive?

My husband and I do not like the commericals you are airing. They are similiar to how bullys lord it over small children. You can see the hurt and confusion on the faces of the kids. Is this the picture you what to give the watching people? We are truly disgusted, and take offense with them. GROW UP!!!! I’m sure you can do better than this. After all, you wouldn’t like to be treated in the same way.
Very sincerely,

Nancy, it’s a bloody commercial for crying out loud. Hurt and confusion. Give me a break. I loathe the over sensitivity/offensiveness of society these days. People just don’t smile anymore instead opting to poke holes and find self created overtones in things. I was brought up in a tough neighbourhood in England and my parents didn’t wrap me up in cotton wool or sue some other parent for telling me off. They gave me direction, told me the difference between right and wrong and not to take myself seriously. I lived by the sword and it served me very well and has made me a better person for it. Mollycoddled kids is not the answer to an improved society. Most of the problems with kids though is the “egg shell walking” parents. Friends instead of parents and wrapping them in five feet of cotton wool. Wrong, very wrong and it’s not the way my 20 week old son will be raised. Respect for people and the planet BUT ignore the sensitive sods who are hell bent on creating a world where you have to watch what you’re saying in case you offend one person out of a hundred. Utter tosh. Life is short, go and enjoy it.

I love watching these commercials, and never get tired of watching them. They are as entertaining as the Hardee commercials, but probably even better because the children don’t seem to be acting, and if they are acting they are very convincing and would be the best actors I ever seen. Also, the boy in the truck commercial is the split image of my son’s friend, Dustin, going back over 20 years ago, which I find especially
an attention getter.
